Wood fencing is popular because it is relatively inexpensive and highly versatile. With highly skilled carpentry, the styles of wooden fencing are abundant. The type of wood fence a customer chooses should be specific to their unique needs in College Station. Whether you are looking for privacy, containment, visual barriers, property enhancement, or protection, wooden fencing can be built to suit. CEDAR VS. PRESSURE TREATED PINE
Pressure treated pine goes through a process of saturating the wood in chemicals to help prevent rotting and insects from destroying the lumber. Pine is a soft wood making it easier to pressure treat, but more likely to warp if it is not pressure treated. This lumber is typically cheaper than cedar. While the pressure treating process helps prevent rotting, decay, and pests, it does not necessarily prevent weathering, including warping, splitting, & discoloring.
Cedar is a quality wood that is naturally resistant to weathering, warping, and splitting. It can and will happen though if the proper maintenance is not provided. We typically use cedar exclusively for pickets unless customers specifically call for cedar framework/posts. Cedar is a more expensive wood than pressure treated pine.
WEATHERING & MAINTENANCE
Anytime you deal with wood outdoors, you are susceptible to weathering and discoloration. This happens when the wood dries out quickly, especially in our hot summers here in College Station. Lumber warps because it is wet and one side dries out quicker than the other. This can lead to splitting and/or cracking. Wood will also turn grayish because of weathering, dirt, & sunlight.
To prevent these negative effects of nature from happening, owners should clean and stain/seal the wood within the first 30-60 days from installation. Fence and deck cleaners are available at hardware stores and should be pressure washed prior to sealing the fence. The fence should be cleaned annually, especially prior to staining/sealing. A sealer should be applied in 2 coats (depending on the sealer/stain). Most sealers are designed to last for 2-5 years.
